Pit and Fissure Sealants

icon

Pit and fissure sealants are a highly effective preventive dental treatment designed to protect teeth from decay. The chewing surfaces of back teeth often have deep grooves (fissures) and small pits where food particles and bacteria can easily become trapped, leading to cavities.

Applying a sealant fills these vulnerable areas, acting as a protective shield over the enamel. This smooth surface makes it easier to clean the teeth and prevents plaque from accumulating. Sealants are commonly recommended for children as soon as their permanent molars come in, but adults can also benefit from them.

The application procedure is quick, painless, and does not require drilling or anesthesia. Protecting teeth with sealants is a simple way to maintain a healthy, cavity-free smile.

Steps for Protective Sealants

01 Step
Dental consultation

The tooth is thoroughly thoroughly cleaned and dried by the dental team. An acidic gel is briefly applied to slightly roughen the tooth surface so the sealant can bond strongly.

02 Step
Denture fabrication

The tooth is rinsed and dried again. The liquid sealant step is then painted onto the chewing surface, flowing into the deep pits and fissures.

03 Step
Denture fitting

A special curing light is used to harden the sealant material. Once hardened, the tooth is fully protected and functions normally.

What are pit and fissure sealants? -
Sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent food and bacteria from causing decay.
Are sealants only for children? +
While most commonly applied to children's newly erupted permanent molars, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants.
How is the sealant applied? +
The process is quick and painless. The tooth is cleaned, prepped with a gel, and the sealant is painted on and hardened with a special light.
How long do sealants last? +
Sealants can protect teeth from decay for up to 10 years, but they need to be checked for chipping or wear at regular dental check-ups.
Do sealants feel uncomfortable? +
You might feel a slight difference in your bite immediately after application, but this usually settles within a few days and feels completely natural.
